About BE

With a vision making the world a more inclusive space, BE is a discovery platform that curates and rates services to meet the needs of marginalized groups and their allies.

Why is BE important?

Although there is a wealth of information online, sorting through the mounds of data to determine if a place is inclusive, safe or accessible can be daunting. That is where BE steps in - with key information about the inclusiveness of these places through our web-app and soon to come mobile app.

Who’s behind BE?

BE is owned and operated for the community by the B-Change Group, a social enterprise on a mission to promote social change through technology.

Having focused on Southeast Asia’s LGBTI (lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, intersex) community for the past 6 years and armed with a social media following 80,000 strong, the remit of our app initiative is being expanded beyond the LGBTI community to include people with disabilities, ethnic and racial minorities and other groups.

We are achieving this by forming partnerships with other like-minded community organizations, along with support from Ashoka Philippines, Levi Strauss Foundation, United Nations Development Programme, USAID,  app engineering partners Javasparks, and branding consultancy Brand Union.

Because of the support of our amazing crowdfunders we started 2017 by testing an early prototype of our app with diverse communities in Cebu, Manila and Singapore.

How will BE work?

While there is no single indicator of inclusiveness of a place or service and no common understanding of inclusion across different marginalized groups, we are optimistic that these concepts will take shape through our work.

Our goal is to make inclusion simpler to understand and discover.

Our inclusion algorithm operates through a framework of geolocation quality metrics. It is designed to raise awareness about the basic needs of diverse groups at point of service. To help app users discern and make more informed decisions. Users will be able to search for services and sort results with filters for safety, fairness and quality. Our social marketing activities will educate by helping stakeholders in the community navigate the challenging and often difficult discussions about inclusion.

Data insights gained will be shared with stakeholders in a bid to advocate for improvements in quality and supply of services. We will leverage our local and international networks among business, government and civil society to ensure that our data contributes to positive change in policy and business. We will share our data to support human rights processes.

Our app enables users to find services that met their individuals needs. Our platform also enables establishment owners to promote their services to diverse segments of the community.
